Tax Reform

Carlton Darby advocates for a shift from relying solely on minimum wages to adopting livable wages as a central component of economic policy. His goal is to ensure that all workers earn enough to meet their basic needs and lead a stable, dignified life.

Under our proposed tax reform plan, we will work towards:

  1. Progressive Tax Rates: We will implement a progressive tax system that ensures the wealthiest Canadians pay their fair share. It's time to close loopholes, tackle tax evasion, and introduce new policies that ensure the rich contribute appropriately to the nation’s prosperity.

  2. Corporate Accountability: Large corporations have reaped the benefits of Canada’s growth for too long without contributing their fair share. We will enforce stricter tax regulations for corporations and ensure they contribute meaningfully to public services, infrastructure, and social welfare programs.

  3. Tax Relief for the Middle Class: We understand the strain placed on hardworking Canadian families. Our tax reform will include targeted tax relief for the middle class, reducing the burden on everyday Canadians and providing direct benefits to those who need it most.

  4. Support for Small Businesses: Small businesses are the backbone of Canada's economy. We will introduce tax incentives and lower tax rates for small businesses to help them grow, expand, and hire more workers, thus creating more jobs across the country.

  5. Carbon Tax with Accountability: As we fight for climate justice, we believe that a carbon tax should be implemented transparently. The funds raised will be reinvested into green initiatives, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects that drive long-term environmental sustainability and economic prosperity. We plan to suspend Carbon Tax and wait on findings

  6. Tax Breaks for Families: Families are the heart of our society, and they should be supported. Our tax reform will ensure greater tax relief for families with children, giving parents the freedom and support to care for their children and invest in their future.

  7. Universal Basic Income Pilot Programs: To combat income inequality, we will pilot Universal Basic Income (UBI) programs in select regions to provide a safety net for every Canadian. This innovative approach will reduce poverty and provide financial stability for all, especially in times of economic uncertainty.

Immigration

The United Progressive Party of Canada, led by Carlton Darby, believes that immigration is one of the most powerful forces for growth, innovation, and diversity in Canada. As a nation built by immigrants, we understand that a fair, welcoming, and efficient immigration system is essential to maintaining our strength as a global leader. Our immigration policies will focus on inclusivity, compassion, and creating pathways for newcomers to contribute meaningfully to our communities, economy, and society.

Key Principles of Our Immigration Plan:

  1. Creating Clear and Fair Pathways to Citizenship: We will streamline the immigration process to ensure that it is fair, transparent, and accessible to all. This includes reducing bureaucratic hurdles, shortening processing times, and providing clear guidance on the steps to citizenship. We will prioritize family reunification, making it easier for families to be together, and ensuring that every immigrant has the opportunity to thrive in Canada.

  2. Supporting Refugees and Asylum Seekers: Canada has a long tradition of offering refuge to those fleeing conflict, persecution, and human rights abuses. We will strengthen our commitment to providing sanctuary for refugees and asylum seekers by expediting their claims, ensuring fair hearings, and offering support services to help them integrate into Canadian society.

  3. Welcoming Skilled Workers and Entrepreneurs: Skilled workers, professionals, and entrepreneurs are key to Canada’s growth and prosperity. Our immigration system will prioritize the attraction of talent in sectors where there are skills shortages, while also providing support for immigrant entrepreneurs to start businesses, create jobs, and drive economic development. We will ensure that newcomers have the tools and resources they need to succeed in the Canadian job market.

  4. Investing in Settlement and Integration Support: Successful immigration doesn’t stop once newcomers arrive. We will invest in robust settlement programs that provide language training, cultural orientation, and support with finding housing and employment. These services will help immigrants integrate smoothly into their new communities, ensuring that they feel welcomed and empowered to contribute.

  5. Addressing Regional Needs: We understand that different regions of Canada have unique immigration needs. Our plan will work with provinces and territories to tailor immigration policies to meet the specific demands of each region, supporting local economies, addressing labor shortages, and ensuring that immigrants are welcomed and supported no matter where they settle.

  6. Promoting Multiculturalism and Inclusion: Multiculturalism is at the heart of Canada’s identity. We will ensure that our immigration policies reflect the value of diversity, fostering a culture of inclusion where all people—regardless of their background—are treated with respect and dignity. We will combat discrimination and racism, ensuring that newcomers are accepted and celebrated as part of the fabric of Canadian society.

  7. Ensuring Fairness and Security: While we remain a welcoming nation, we will also ensure that immigration policies are fair and secure. This includes implementing necessary security checks to ensure that individuals coming to Canada do not pose a risk to public safety. At the same time, we will maintain a humane approach, ensuring that security measures do not unduly hinder the rights and opportunities of law-abiding immigrants.

  8. Environmental and Climate Migration: As the climate crisis intensifies, Canada must be prepared to support climate refugees—people forced to leave their homes due to environmental disasters and changing weather patterns. We will develop policies that recognize the needs of climate migrants and provide a safe and supportive environment for those displaced by environmental factors.

Affordable Housing

The United Progressive Party of Canada, under the leadership of Carlton Darby, is committed to ensuring that every Canadian has access to safe, affordable, and high-quality housing. Housing is a fundamental human right, and no one should have to choose between paying rent or meeting basic needs like food and healthcare. Our vision is to address the housing crisis head-on, providing affordable options for families, individuals, and communities across Canada.

Key Principles of Our Affordable Housing Plan:

  1. Increased Investment in Housing Supply: We will significantly increase funding for the construction of affordable housing units across the country. This includes both public and private partnerships to ensure that enough housing is available to meet the growing demand.

  2. Affordable Rent Programs: To ease the burden on renters, we will implement rent control policies that limit annual increases, ensuring that rent prices remain affordable for individuals and families, particularly in high-demand urban areas.

  3. Support for First-Time Homebuyers: We will introduce new support programs to help first-time homebuyers enter the housing market, including down payment assistance, reduced mortgage rates, and tax incentives, helping to make homeownership more accessible to young Canadians and growing families.

  4. Addressing Homelessness: Our plan includes an aggressive approach to eliminate homelessness in Canada, with targeted support for those facing housing insecurity. We will expand shelter options, provide transitional housing programs, and invest in long-term solutions for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

  5. Sustainable and Green Housing Development: As part of our commitment to sustainability, we will promote the development of green, energy-efficient homes that reduce environmental impact while lowering utility costs for homeowners and renters alike.

  6. Building Vibrant Communities: Our affordable housing plan will not just create more housing units but will also focus on building vibrant, supportive communities. We will invest in infrastructure like parks, schools, and public transportation to ensure that affordable housing is part of a thriving and connected community.

  7. Ending Speculation in the Housing Market: We will take strong action to curb speculative practices, such as real estate flipping, that drive up housing prices and make it harder for ordinary Canadians to find affordable homes. By increasing taxes on vacant properties and implementing stricter regulations, we will ensure housing remains for those who need it, not just for investors seeking profit.
